How Different Types of Lighting Work Together to Light Up Your Bathroom

How many times have you walked into your bathroom, flipped on a switch, and then groaned because you couldn’t see to put on your makeup or shave?

Happens all the time, doesn’t it?

We can completely relate, because we have spent lots of time in homes that were constructed with only one light in the bathrooms.

Thankfully, times are a changing and you and everyone else expects and demands more than one light inside bathrooms.

Here are the 5 different types of lighting that you will want to install to light up your bathroom:

Task Lighting

Task lighting is perfect for shaving, applying makeup, styling hair, and more. The best fixtures for task lighting are sconces that are mounted on either side of the mirror over the vanity. We recommend placing these lights next to the mirror instead of above it, because lighting above the mirrors causes glaring and shadows in the worst places.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting can be used to enhance all your favorite features within your bathroom. These features can include accent walls, artwork, or a vase filled with flowers. These lights are perfect to leave on all night as nightlights too.

Decorative Lighting

Decorative lighting can be used above a bathtub, over a chair, or anywhere else that you want to add a little visual appeal. Most of the time, homeowners will use pendant lights for these fixtures, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t use a chandelier that you found for a steal at a local thrift shop.

Candles

Candles can be used around the bathtub, toilet, and vanity, as long as they are kept away from towels and other flammable objects. You can light them for when you want to relax in the tub or simply sit in the nearby chair getting ready for the evening.

Ambient Lighting

No one loves turning on the bright lights in their bathroom in the middle of the night, which is why we always suggest incorporating ambient lighting. These light fixtures can be placed anywhere in the room, but we recommend placing them on dimming switches, so you can control the amount of light coming from them.

Combining these lights together will create a warm and welcoming space that you will want to spend more time in. You will no longer need to worry about whether or not you look well, nor will you need to blind yourself during those middle of the night trips to the bathroom. Instead, you can turn on the lights that will help you complete the task at hand while relaxing at the same time.
