Know Where to Save and Where to Splurge on Your Kitchen Remodeling Project
We all want to make the most of a kitchen remodeling project. After all, you go into it with an open mind and plenty of optimism; the last thing you want is to end with disappointment. Running out of money mid-project because you decided to splurge a few times too many is a great way to end the project with disappointment.
It’s also disappointing to finish the project and realize you didn’t get that nice dishwasher you really wanted or those amazing drawer pulls that would have looked so good. So today we want to go over some rules that will help you understand where to splurge and where to save on kitchen remodeling.
- Appliances – What’s your favorite appliance? The dishwasher because it simplifies life? The refrigerator because it keeps your food fresh? The stove because you love to cook? Knowing how you use your kitchen will help you choose whether you want to splurge on appliances or save money there to splurge on something else.
- Cabinets – Stock cabinets are nice and if you find some high quality stock cabinets, go for it. However, custom cabinets are a worthwhile splurge point if you’re looking for something that you just can’t seem to find anywhere.
- Countertop – Laminate countertops can be pretty, but they stain easily. They also take damage from knives and hot objects – both of which will be in your kitchen. If you plan to replace the countertop again in five years, go for something less permanent. Otherwise, take the opportunity to splurge.
- Hardware and Fixtures – Cabinet pulls, light fixtures, electrical outlet faceplates, light switch faceplates, and the kitchen sink faucet are things that really tie a room together. We fully recommend splurging on these items because even the nicest ones are still somewhat inexpensive in the grand scheme of things and they make a major impact on the appearance of the kitchen.
How to Choose
Ultimately the decisions are yours. You know how you use your kitchen and you know how different parts of the kitchen affect your lifestyle. We hope that you will take our pointers into consideration and use them to help you choose where to splurge and where to save.
