12 Ideas for Remodeling Your Master Suite for the Ultimate in Comfort

Attic Space Remodeled LakeviewAhhh… the master suite. This is where the master of the home is supposed to rest well and wake up rested after a night of slumber. Unfortunately many master suites built in the 90s or earlier, like many homes in Chicago, have very poorly designed master suites. So we’ve put together a list of 12 great ideas for remodeling your master suite.

  1. Large Bedroom. Your master suite should be large enough to comfortably fit your bed and bedroom furnishings. You should never feel cramped or like you have to dodge furniture.
  2. Trey or Coffer Ceiling. Create the cathedral ceiling you love or raise the entire thing six inches to create a higher ceiling. Crown molding is another excellent way to make the room look larger.
  3. Window Seat. Install a window seat below a bay window or build a nook that allows you to design a bench seat. You could even design a bench seat with secret storage.
  4. A fireplace brings the romance to any room. Consider a pass-through fireplace in the wall between the bath tub and the bedroom for double the romance.
  5. Walk-in Closet. Walk-in closets are a must in the master suite. You need space to get dressed in the closet and leave your suite looking and feeling like a million bucks.
  6. Sitting Area. A seating area allows you the ability to relax uninterrupted as long as you say no kids allowed. Relax and unwind with a small mini bar at the end of a rough week.
  7. Small Office Area. We recommend a very small office area in the master suite if you need one at all. Don’t make your master suite where you conduct business. This area is for relaxation. The office is for work.
  8. Linen Closet. Build a small linen closet between the bedroom and bathroom. This area is to store extra shampoos and body washes, as well as towels and other necessities.
  9. Separate Tub and Shower. Go all out and install a large jetted tub or a gorgeous clawfoot tub. Design an amazing shower for two with built-in storage and seating. But separate the tub and shower for the ultimate in comfort for both.
  10. Separate Toilet Area. Design your master bathroom with a separate toilet area for the ultimate in privacy.
  11. Half-Wall for Privacy. Full walls around the tub or shower aren’t a necessity, but half walls provide some privacy without blocking off the area entirely.
  12. Large Windows. Large windows offer a lot of natural light, which is perfect for the bathroom. If bathroom privacy is an issue with large windows, consider some type of privacy glass like blocks or frosted glass.
