5 Options to Consider when Choosing Your Kitchen Island

Everyone wants a kitchen island, but not everyone has the space for one of these little luxuries in life. However, if you are one of the lucky ones that get to put one in your kitchen, we want to make sure that you are choosing the best one. After all, we want you to be happy with your decision and be able to use this island for many years in the future.

Here are 5 options to consider when choosing your kitchen island:

Features

There can be a million features on a kitchen island, and while that could be a slight exaggeration, it’s not far from the truth. We recommend writing down all the features that you are going to want incorporated in your island, but keep it realistic with functional items. We are talking about a sink, mini fridge, area for trash, seating, towel bar, drawers, etc.

Height

The height of most standard kitchen islands is 36 inches, which also happens to be the standard height for food prep. However, this height is not the same for what you will need for an island with seating, which is normally 42 inches. You can either install a tiered island to solve that problem, or you will need to look for stool options that will fit the 36-inch guidelines.

Shape

Most kitchen islands are rectangles, but that doesn’t mean that you cannot have one that has a cutout where the sink is or an oval shape where the seating is. The options are endless, and you can create the shape that will work best with your kitchen design.

Materials

Your kitchen island can be made from any type of material that you want. The bottom will usually be made from wood and will be a style that matches your kitchen décor. The countertop though will match the way that you will use it the most. Bakers will want to install butcher block and marble, while granite will work best for an island that will be used more universally.

Storage

There are numerous storage options that you can choose for your kitchen island. You can have built-in wine racks, towel racks, pull-out cabinets, drawers, open shelves, built-in baskets, and more.

Kitchen islands are one of the most customizable items in a kitchen and you will want to consider all your options before you decide on the best one for your space. We recommend that you purchase or design one that will fit all your needs, so that you will get the most use out of it for many years to come.
