5 Tips for Designing an ADA Compliant Kitchen

Kitchen design is one of our favorites here at Bart’s Remodeling. We enjoy creating special places where families gather and enjoy time together. The kitchen is the busiest room in the home and it needs to have a great deal more functionality than any other room in the home. Let’s look at 5 tips you need to know for designing an ADA compliant kitchen.

No Barriers

The kitchen can’t have steps, narrow walkways, or an island in the way. You need to plan for a kitchen that is 40 inches wide if it is a pass-through design or 60 inches wide if it is U-shaped and a wheelchair needs room to maneuver.

Low Work Spaces

The typical countertop is 36 inches high. Workspaces must be 28 to 34 inches high for ADA compliance. This work area should also have a 30 to 42 inch opening underneath to accommodate a wheelchair. You won’t miss the base cabinets that would normally be there as long as the rest of the kitchen is designed to make up for it.

Accessible Sink

The sink should also be 28 to 34 inches high so that someone in a wheelchair can reach it easily. Consider using a hands-free faucet and soap dispenser, and hang a towel nearby as well. This will allow someone in a wheelchair to truly feel independent while in your kitchen.

Shelving and Cabinets

Upper cabinets are not conducive to the ADA compliant atmosphere. This means that roughly 50 percent of all cabinets in the room are not compliant. Create lower storage solutions that will allow someone in a wheelchair to reach the necessary pots, pans, and other dishes.

Appliances

All appliances must have a clear floor space of 30 inches by 48 inches. They must also be positioned to accommodate a forward approach. Certain appliances have different ADA requirements, so we will discuss those when you call us to schedule a consultation.
