6 Detailed Factors to Consider when Remodeling Your Home – Part One

Real Mens Tools Picjumbo ComWe’ve noticed that there are thousands of articles online that describe the very basics of remodeling your home. You know you have to have a plan, but what considerations should go into creating that plan? You know you need a budget, but what details do you need to keep in mind? We decided that we’re going to walk you through 6 factors that you need to take into consideration when remodeling your home. This idea has turned into a two-part blog series, so keep an eye out for part two!

Create a Plan

  • Begin your plan with a purpose. The project will go much more smoothly if you have a purpose in mind. Why do you want to remodel your home? Are we improving flow and functionality or modernizing the whole home? Is energy efficiency the goal? Do you need ADA compliant features?
  • A whole home remodeling project requires a lot more than just remodeling the kitchen or bathroom. Will you stay in the home while it’s being remodeled or will you find a short term rental? You may decide to stay with family or friends while your home is less-than-perfect.
  • Hire a contractor who has done it all. The term general contractor only goes so far if your contractor only remodels kitchens. It’s great to narrow the scope of your business sometimes, but in the event of a whole house remodel, the contractor needs to have several subcontractors on the side in the event that he needs a plumber, electrician, or other tradesmen. The contractor you hire needs to have experience in all areas of home design and building – like us.

Get Creative and Be Unique

Remodeling the interior of your home doesn’t mean you have to throw everything you own onto the street. Keep your favorite items and reuse them. Find a way to bring them current. Look at Pinterest, Instagram, Etsy, and other creative websites.

Consider implementing a few ADA compliant features if you plan to age in place. This would include widening doorways and hallways, no-step entries, and curbless walk-in showers. Using ADA compliant features doesn’t mean your home has to feel like a hospital or nursing home.

Set Your Budget in Stone

Your budget tells us exactly what you can afford, so please, be conservative and overestimate pricing. We’ll give you an estimate for a completed project as soon as we’ve seen what you want and negotiated certain things with you. Our goal is to work with you to rebuild the entire inside of your home to make it the home you want.

Another way to keep your budget under control is to buy things throughout the year before the project begins. This allows you to watch for sales and get the best deals on things in advance so you’re not crunched for time while remodeling. Then when you’re creating your budget, you can take previously-purchased items off to make room for other things.
