7 Reasons You Should Always Overestimate Storage in Your New Custom Home

Storage space always seems to be at a premium in every home. As human beings, we tend to collect stuff. And stuff. And more stuff. Sound familiar? We have stuff in closets from 20 years ago and more stuff in the garage waiting for winter weather to get here so we can use them. We have more stuff stored in the basement because that’s where all that extra stuff goes, right? So if you are in the process of designing a custom home, don’t underestimate your future storage needs. Here are seven things to keep in mind when you’re designing storage areas for your custom home.

  1. Expanding Family: Whether you’re planning to have children, adopt children, or allow relatives to live with you in the future, you need to plan ahead for family expansion possibilities.
  2. Growing Children: Kids grow. It’s just what they do. They need space to expand and store their own items, too. You will have certain mementos that you want to keep while they’re growing up, but they also need storage for things they deem important.
  3. Crafts and Hobbies: Craft rooms are one of the areas that people often say they want to add onto their home. We often build additions or remodel spaces in basements specifically for crafts and hobbies.
  4. Seasonal Sports: Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and the plethora of other sports that your family can be involved in require specific storage. Most sports equipment requires a cool, dry storage space.
  5. Seasonal Clothing Needs: We have a few different seasons here in Chicagoland, it’s either frigid, so hot it’ll melt your tennis shoes, or relatively comfortable. So you need storage for winter clothes, summer clothes, and then fall and spring clothing – for every member of the family.
  6. Holiday Decorations: You’re probably like most families and you have holiday decorations for a variety of holidays. You need to keep everything organized to keep the different types of lights from tangling and decorations from becoming jumbled together.
  7. Family Keepsakes: We touched on children’s things earlier, but most of us also have things that have been passed down from parents or grandparents. You may have keepsakes that have been in the family for generations, and we completely understand that.
