Focus on these 3 Important Kitchen Zones when Designing Your Kitchen

A kitchen can be a beautiful space, but intertwined with all that beauty is layers of functionality. Much of this rests on understanding the importance of kitchen zones. When you plan the layout you need to know how the items and fixtures work as a part of these zones. If you have difficulty keeping this space organized you have to think about these zones when you plan a remodel. Afterwards you will have a more functional, efficient space.

The Refrigerator

This is usually considered the main point of the kitchen triangle. This is basically where meal preparation starts, since that is where most of the food is stored. Designers usually suggest positioning the fridge so that you face it when you enter the kitchen. A countertop should be near to the stove, whether it is beside it or directly across from it. As you start to prepare meals, you will be moving back and forth between these two points. For efficient work in the kitchen, the storage area for small utensils, mixers and anything else used in meal prep should be located close to the fridge and counter.

The Sink

In general, kitchen layouts should have the sink positioned between the fridge and the stove area. The sink and the countertop form an important part of the kitchen work area. Here you can wash fruits and vegetables and move directly to the counter space to continue working. After meals, plates will end up of this same counter before being cleared off and transferred to the sink or dishwasher. A trash container should also be close to the sink for quick disposal of food scraps. A small storage area for dishtowels, and cleaning products should be a part of this kitchen zone.

The Stove

The cooking area may have a basic stove, a cooktop and wall oven or a range. If the home has a dining room, this zone should be positioned nearby. Even if the kitchen is small, there should be a countertop space which allows you to transfer food from the cooking area. It is not wise to have to walk too far while carrying hot items. If possible, there should be a storage area in this zone for serving platters, bowls and utensils.
