Home Remodeling: Carefully Consider Where to Splurge and Where to Save

Trying to stick with a budget while remodeling your home can be difficult, but there are many ways that you can save money and still be able to splurge on some items that you really want. The key to remodeling is choosing the items that you splurge on carefully, because there is nothing worse than paying a lot of money for something that you never end up using.

Lake Forest Remodeling

Here are 7 things that you should consider before splurging when remodeling your home:

Remodel for You

We recommend that you prioritize your spending based on how you will use the space. There is no point in installing a six burner professional range with dual ovens if you never cook. However, if your family loves to watch movies together, it would be beneficial to install surround sound and a very high quality television or projector in your entertainment room.

Customize – But Not Too Much

You never want to over-customize anything in your home. If you need to put your home on the market in the future, that bright blue wall to wall carpet might not help sell your home. If you’re going to use carpeting, we recommend choosing a neutral color.

Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinetry

Customized cabinets in the kitchen and other rooms in your home would be nice, but you shouldn’t get too crazy with customization and buy cabinets that are not standard sizes unless it is necessary. Many stock or semi-custom cabinets look just as good as custom cabinets and they cost much less.

Heated Flooring

This is Chicago. Radiant floor heating is a wonderful option and it is easier to install it as you are replacing the flooring. This is a splurge that is well worth it during cooler months. And winter is just around the corner.

The Insulation Factor

If you are increasing the insulation in your home or replacing your windows and doors, you will want to choose the best available. While it will cost a little bit more money, you will end up saving a lot of money on energy bills over the years.

Marble – Almost

Marble tiles may look nice in the shower, but you can achieve the same look by purchasing tiles that look just like marble at a fraction of the cost. This is one way you can still achieve the appearance of an expensive material without the cost – and we promise not to tell the neighbors.

The Focal Point for Decorating

Every room in your home should have a focal point and you should splurge to make those focal points the best that they can be. In the living room, the focal point can be a grand fireplace while in the dining room it can be an antique chandelier that you fell in love with while antiquing with friends. Whatever the focal point in each room, make that your splurge item, because it’s worth it.

Splurge and Save with Your Next Home Remodel Project

There is no point in spending thousands of dollars on every detail in your home when you remodel, because it is not necessary. There are many options available to you that are much cheaper and look just as nice as or even better than the expensive options. We recommend that you think about everything that you plan on purchasing and decide which items you can’t live without, so you can then determine where you can save some money.
