Maximize the Use of Natural Light in Your Kitchen and Bathroom

The amount of light in the kitchen and bathroom can mean the difference between a useful room and a useless room. The kitchen has to have a good amount of light for preparing food, doing homework, working on crafts, and a multitude of other reasons.

Stencil.default 7The bathroom needs good lighting because that’s where you prepare to leave the home; it’s where you fix your hair and put on your makeup while preparing to face the outside world. Here are a few ways you can maximize the natural light in the kitchen and bathroom.

  • Windows – The more windows, the better! You can increase the size of existing windows or install new windows. Transom windows help bring light into the room beautifully.
  • Skylights – Skylights are an excellent source of light in both the kitchen and bathroom. They do require direct access to the roof for proper installation, so a kitchen that’s on the main level of a multi-story home may not be a good candidate for skylights.
  • Sun Tunnels – Sun tunnels are a lot like skylights. They can be installed in any room because they do not require direct access to the roof. Sun is reflected through the tunnel using a series of mirrors to create the effect of having a skylight to bring natural light into the room.
  • Doors – Doors that lead outside can be a good source of natural light. A sliding glass door is a great addition to the kitchen or dining room.
  • Borrowed Light – Borrow sunlight from other rooms when possible. For example, the sliding door installed in the dining room can be a source of natural light for the kitchen if the rooms are close.
  • Floor Plan – An open floor plan allows you to borrow natural light from adjoining rooms. Wall removal between rooms can get tricky, so don’t attempt this job as a DIY project.
